Computer Fundamentals and Essential Skills

Objective:

By the end of this course, participants will gain basic computer skills, understand essential software, and be able to perform common tasks on both the internet and desktop applications.

Week 1: Introduction to Computers and Operating Systems

  1. Overview of Computer Hardware:

    • Components: CPU, RAM, storage, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

    • Different types of devices (desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone).

  2. Understanding Operating Systems:

    • Introduction to Windows, macOS, and Linux.

    • Basic navigation: the desktop, taskbar, and start menu.

    • Managing files and folders: creating, renaming, and organizing files.

  3. Practice Activity:

    • Create folders and organize sample files into appropriate directories.

Week 2: Basic Software Applications

  1. Text Editing and Word Processing:

    • Introduction to Microsoft Word and Google Docs.

    • Creating, saving, and formatting documents.

    • Basic editing features: text alignment, font size, and color.

  2. Introduction to Spreadsheets:

    • Overview of Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.

    • Basic functions: entering data, simple formulas, and basic formatting.

  3. Practice Activity:

    • Create a simple document in Word/Docs and a basic budget sheet in Excel/Sheets.

Week 3: Internet and Email Basics

  1. Using Web Browsers:

    • Understanding browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari).

    • Performing web searches and navigating websites.

    • Browser tabs, history, and bookmarks.

  2. Introduction to Email:

    • Setting up a Gmail or Outlook account.

    • Composing, sending, and receiving emails.

    • Email etiquette, attachments, and spam.

  3. Practice Activity:

    • Send an email to a classmate with an attached file, practice browsing common websites.

Week 4: Security and Troubleshooting

  1. Basic Computer Security:

    • Importance of antivirus software and firewalls.

    • Creating strong passwords and understanding phishing.

  2. Common Troubleshooting Techniques:

    • Simple fixes for common problems (e.g., frozen screen, internet issues).

    • How to check for updates and install software.

  3. Practice Activity:

    • Practice troubleshooting exercises based on common scenarios.
